Welding technology of Carbon steel socket weld flange

1. Socket welding forms a fillet weld, while butt welding forms a butt weld. The butt joint is better than the socket in terms of the strength and stress of the welding seam. Therefore, the butt joint should be adopted in the occasions of high pressure grade and poor service condition.
2. Socket welding is generally used for small pipe diameter less than or equal to DN40, which is more economical. Butt welding is generally used for DN40 and above. Socket welding connection is mainly used for small diameter valve and pipe, pipe fittings and pipe welding. Small diameter pipe generally has thin wall thickness, easy to cross edge and ablation, difficult to weld, and is suitable for socket welding. In addition, socket welding socket has the role of strengthening, so it is often used under high pressure. However, socket welding also has disadvantages. One is that the stress condition is not good after welding, and it is easy to occur that the welding is not fully penetration. There are gaps left in the pipe system, so socket welding is not suitable for pipe systems with high requirements for the corrosion of crack sensitive media and cleaning. In addition, ultra-high pressure pipe, even if the wall thickness of small diameter pipe is also very large, can be connected by butt welding as far as possible to avoid socket welding.

3. The diameter of the former shall be one large and one small before inserting into the welding. The diameter of the latter may be the same or different.
4. Socket welding is mostly used for those with lower pressure grade and smaller diameter, while butt welding is often used for those with higher pressure grade. Butt welding shall undergo 100% flaw detection test to ensure no leakage.
As the name implies, socket welding is to insert the pipe into the welding, butt welding is directly opposite to the pipe mouth welding. General welding requirements than socket welding requirements, welding quality is good, but the means of detection is relatively strict. To do X-ray inspection of welding, socket welding magnetic powder or penetration detection can be done (such as carbon steel magnetic powder, stainless steel penetration). If the pipeline fluid welding requirements are not high, it is recommended to use socket welding, detection is convenient.
